Bio

Haunted by Pigeons is the practice of Emily Meredith Lewis, a visual storyteller connecting people to nature through art and animations. When she is not drawing, observing, or researching facts about nature, Emily doodles whimsical ghouls and monsters (combining both is always a bonus). She lives in upstate New York with her partner, Jeremiah (screenwriter and producer of horror films) and their pups Cider and Miso. She has an Animation Certificate from Rhode Island School of Design CE (June 2023) and is set to complete a Natural Science Illustration Certificate in June 2024.

About

Why Haunted by Pigeons? I wanted a name that encompassed my passion for nature, as well as the whimsy of my animation work and monster drawings. The name is a nod to the loss of the Passenger pigeon, a species whose numbers went from billions to none. Though I draw a variety of flora and fauna, the Passenger pigeon sits always in the corner of my mind. If time travel were possible, I would want to go back and see for myself how their flocks were massive enough to block out the sun for hours. No one believed they were impacting the species by hunting them en masse; to use our terminology today: nobody realized that they were endangered. By 1857 a bill was brought to the Ohio State legislature to protect the pigeons, but it was determined they needed no protection, that they were “wonderfully prolific” and that “no ordinary destruction could lessen them.” A mere 57 years later they were gone. They are the reminder why it’s important to learn, connect, care, and conserve nature.
